Vintage Conditions

The resilience of the Tumblong Hills vineyard was on show in 2019; a mostly hot and dry vintage across the continent. Overall fruit yield was down, thus harvest 7 to 10-days earlier than average, though through prudent water and canopy management, grape quality was outstanding. Sugar levels were moderate, while acid and pH levels were unexpectedly good. Generally, vintage 2019 at Tumblong Hills delivered wines with bright fruit power, moderate alcohol levels and fresh integrated fruit acid profiles.

Winemaking Notes

Hand-harvested over 3 consecutive mornings commencing 21 February, the fruit was destemmed only at the winery, and transferred to stainless steel open-top fermenters. The fermenters were filled with inert gas and sealed, allowing the fruit to cold-macerate for 55 hours. A cultured yeast kicked off fermentation, which gradually gained momentum and heat, finishing in an 9-day time period. Old, large format wood was used to age the wine for 6-months.

Tasting notes

An enticing bright ruby colour precedes aromas of dark cherry, potpourri, and hints of woodsmoke. Flooded with bold cherry and raspberry flavours, the palate is pleasantly threaded with a line of fresh acidity and supported by fine fruit tannin.

Food pairing notes

Beef cuts like ribeye or prime rib are particularly well suited to this wine, as are sausages, duck and pork shank. When it comes to vegetables and sauces, think Italian! Nebbiolo goes well with a number of regional dishes that include tomato-based sauces, garlic, olives, pizza and butternut squash.
